Word of the Week #28

The Humble Martial Artist: Finding Strength in Simplicity

“In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s there are few.”  — Shunryu Suzuki

The noble quest for humility—the path less traveled, yet rich with hidden treasures!  In the bustling world of martial arts—where high kicks meet ancient wisdom—a quiet warrior often emerges: the humble martial artist. While flashy techniques and black belts grab attention, it’s the unassuming ones who hold the true secrets.

The term "humility" comes from the Latin word humilitas, a noun related to the adjective humilis, which may be translated as "humble", but also as "grounded", or "from the earth", since it derives from humus (earth).

Let’s step onto the tatami and explore the dojo of humility.

The Essence of Humility

1. Embrace the White Belt Mindset

The white belt is a symbol of innocence and potential. It shows a desire and willingness to learn. They have an unparalleled spirit. A humble martial artist is never ashamed of where they started . as we all began at the same level - a blank slate, eager to learn.

The humble warrior doesn’t scoff at simplicity; they find beauty in the foundational stances, the precise footwork, and the rhythm of breath. Your white belt whispers, “Stay curious.”

2. Emptying the Cup

Imagine your mind as a cup. To fill it with new knowledge, you must first empty it of assumptions, ego, and rigidity. Be open to learning—even from the smallest pebble on the path. The humble martial artist knows that expertise can sometimes blind us; it’s the beginner’s mind that sees the sunrise.

The humble martial artist approaches each training session with an open mind—a cup ready to be emptied. They discard assumptions, ego, and preconceptions. Why? Because the empty cup can be filled with new knowledge, fresh insights, and unexpected growth. They don’t cling to past victories or dwell on defeats; they sip from the stream of continuous learning.

3. Bowing out of Respect

The mat is a leveler, it's not just a floor. The humble martial artist bows to everyone—the sensei, the fellow student, even the janitor who sweeps the floor. They recognize that respect isn’t reserved for hierarchy; it’s a universal currency. In that bow, they say, “I honor you; we’re on this journey together.”

That bow reminds you that you’re part of something bigger—a lineage, a community, a legacy. It’s a reminder to carry yourself with dignity, both on and off the mat.

Listen Like a Bamboo Forest

1. To Your Instructors

When your instructor speaks, listen as if the universe itself is sharing secrets. Their corrections aren’t criticism; they’re invitations to refinement. Humility means nodding, absorbing, and adjusting. Your kata isn’t set in stone; it’s a dance with the wind.

2. To Your Peers

Your fellow practitioners—those silent companions on this journey—hold wisdom too. Listen to their stories, their struggles, and their victories. In their eyes, you’ll find reflections of your own path. The humble martial artist knows that everyone wears a different belt, but we all breathe the same air.

Lessons Beyond the Dojo

1. Off the Mat, On the Street

Humility isn’t confined to the dojo. It spills into life’s alleys. The humble martial artist doesn’t flaunt their skills; they walk softly. When faced with conflict, they choose resolution over retaliation. Their strength lies not in overpowering opponents, but in defusing tension with a smile.

2. Silent Leadership

Leadership isn’t about shouting orders; it’s about quiet influence. The humble martial artist leads by example. Others watch their dedication, their patience during drills, their encouragement to struggling peers. No grand speeches—just consistent action. They inspire without fanfare.

3. Fall Gracefully, Rise Resiliently

In martial arts, falling is inevitable. Throws, sweeps, takedowns—they all lead to the ground. The humble martial artist doesn’t resist. They fall gracefully, absorbing the impact. Life, too, throws us off balance—loss, setbacks, heartache. The humble ones fall, then rise with resilience.

So, next time you see a martial artist who bows a little deeper, who listens more than they speak, who wears their white belt with pride—know that you’re witnessing the humble warrior. They don’t seek applause; they seek growth. And perhaps, in their simplicity, they hold the universe.

May your steps echo the wisdom of centuries.
